Olive Rose Presidents Award

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the much loved Olive Rose.  Olive acted as National Secretary of the CBAI from 2002-2007, as South Munster Regional President & Secretary over the years and was acting as Webmaster & PRO for the Region and Evening Echo Bridge Correspondent up until her passing. She organised an annual weekend’s bridge in Killarney for the last number of years.  Olive was the first Winner of the CBAI President’s Award in 2009.

A service of remembrance for  Olive will be held on Tuesday at 12.30 in St Peter’s Church of Ireland in Bandon.  May she rest in peace.

I B U  INTER-PROVINCIALS  (Sat 18th and Sun 19th November – Cavan)

The annual championship among the 4 provinces takes place on Saturday and Sunday 18th and 19th November in the Cavan Crystal Hotel.  Each province sends its best 12 Master Players and its best 12 Intermediate players and this year for the first time, its best 12 Area Masters.  There are 3 separate Inter-Provincial Championships taking place (Master, Intermediate and Area Master).  The format is ‘Team of Four’ where you play each of the other 9 teams from the other three provinces.

The ‘Area Master’ Championship is a new event and if you are interested you should contact your County Secretary or your Regional Secretary to see what selection method is being used to select your provincial team.   For instance the North-Region qualifier takes place this coming Wednesday night 1st November in the Southern Hotel.  If I can be of help then feel free to contact me.

C B A I   CAMROSE  TRIALS (Friday 27th October to Monday 30th October)

This year Ireland, as the host nation, has two teams playing the annual Camrose Championship.  The highly successful team (Mark Moran, Rory Boland, Tom Hanlon, Hugh McGann, John Carroll, Tommy Garvey and Grainne Barton) have been given the first spot in recognition of their incredible string of international successes and now we have 10 teams competing for the remaining qualifying spot.

As we approach the end of the holiday period, it is time to shake off the cobwebs and dust off the ‘notes’.  Classes for beginners and improvers commence this coming Thursday 5th October – all in the Southern Hotel at 7.30 pm each night.  All welcome.

Our thanks and appreciation go to Gordon Lessells who steps down after serving his 5 year term as Secretary/Treasurer of the Irish Bridge Union.  Those of you who know Gordon will know that he is unselfish in his dedication to improving, developing and fostering Bridge in Ireland at all levels and has always gone out of his way to make sure that all participants at any of his events were well looked after and welcomed.  While Gordon might be stepping back – hopefully his testing quizzes will still make the odd appearance around the country.

Ireland win top Invitational Teams event in Vilnius

Team Ireland had the honour of being invited to join a star studded group of 10 teams in the Vilnius Invitational Teams Event.  The top field included Monaco, Zia Mahmood, David Gold’s Team, De Botton team, Martens’ top Polish team,  Spanish Open team etc etc.  The top four qualified for the knockout stages.  Ireland finished in third place and had to face ‘Vytas’ team whom they beat and then faced the World Champions – Monaco – in the final.  After a very closely fought battle, Ireland managed to beat Monaco by 1 IMP.  It was a thrilling match and an amazing result for Team Ireland.

Well Done Grainne, Mark, Rory, Tom, Hugh, John and Tommy.

Charity Drive this coming Sunday 8th October in aid of Soroptomists in the Tennis Club Castlebar – starting at 5 O’Clock.  All Welcome.
