Tom Hanlon French Champion 2022
Our own Tom Hanlon and his international team-mates (Zaleski, Lorenzini, Volcker, Cronier and Bessis) have just defended their French Premier League title by beating the powerful Zimmerman team in the final coming from behind to win by 38 imps.  The League involved 3 x weekend of live qualifiers in October and November followed by a 64 board semifinal and a 96 board final last weekend and all live (face to face) at french bridge federation headquarters – well done Tom.

Mary Cleary RIP

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of one of our nicest and greatest Sligo Players – Mary Cleary.  Mary was always a pleasure to meet at the Bridge table either as a partner or as an opponent and in her heyday Mary was unbeatable no matter who she played with.  Thankfully she handed the baton on by training her sister Eileen Keaney and her niece Anne-Marie Keaney.

We extend our deepest sympathies to her husband P.J. and her children Siobhán, Senan, Eimear and Fionnuala and her sister Eileen Keaney and her niece Anne-Marie Keaney and her brother Tom Gilligan, her daughter-in-law Rose, sons-in-law Maurice, Sean and David, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, grandchildren Muiris, Oisin, Ferdia, Naoise, Tadhg, Liam, Aoibh, Aifric, Caoimhe and Cillian, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Brian Place (Avogadro1) RIP
We are deeply saddened to report the sudden passing of our regular member and good friend Brian Place from Galway.  Avogadro1 entertained us at the end of each night with his skillful command of the English language where he resurrected unusual words and put them together like a wordsmith to form alliterations and rhymes to compliment the tournament directors with his elloquent musical poetry.  We also remember Brian for his friendly and courteous manner at the table.  He was the consummate charmer.
We extend our deepest sympathies to his daughter Fiona and all his family.  May he Rest in Peace.

September 2021 Results

Fearghal O'Boyle

After nearly 30 years as Chief Executive of the CBAI, the young Fermanagh lad, Paul Porteous is enjoying his first week of retirement.  A Master Bridge player, an incredible organiser, an efficient administrator, a great communicator, a patient caring listener and throw in a good sense of humour and an affable personality and you have the successful ingredients to help us understand how one man was able to steer the second biggest association in the country (after the GAA) along a unified and steady path.

It has been said that he knows all 24000 of us by name and we can well believe it.  We say ‘Thank You Paul’ for your outstanding and generous service to Bridge in Ireland over the last 30 years and we can think of many players, tournament directors, club secretaries and regional secretaries that Paul has helped over the years with his encouragement and calmness when faced with ‘delicate’ situations.  Paul knew what we were thinking before the thought even entered our minds so he knew when to be ‘good cop’ and when to be ‘bad cop’.

Irish Bridge – North, South, East and West is certainly in a better place now than it was 30 years ago – we have a better standard of player, we have well trained tournament directors, we have a great Teaching and Youth program, we have a great communication structure – and without doubt Paul Porteous has been the driving force behind these and other progressive ideas – often involving untold hours of work above and beyond the call of duty.  His many talents have also been noticed by our European friends where he is currently the Secretary of the European Bridge League.

We wish Paul, Maureen and all the Porteous family many years of Happy Retirement – Well Deserved Sir – and we wish your successor Dermot O’Brien the best of luck – Dermot is fully aware that he has a hard act to follow.
